Replacing rails within 60 hours

Commissioned by Tata Steel, Anton Industrial Services has replaced the existing rails of two conveyor belts. These conveyer belts distribute iron ore over various underlying bunkers.

Due to the very heavy construction of the conveyor belts, the rail has become worn over the years. In some places only 5mm rails of the original 20mm were left. The replacement of this rail was on the agenda of Tata Steel for years, but during the crisis time this project has been postponed. However, in recent years small parts of the rails have been replaced out of necessity. Now that it turned out that the rail really could not function properly in its totality, it was up to us to get this job done. Due to the replacement of the rails, the conveyor belts can continue for years in a responsible manner.

The project took place in the Pelletfactory during a major maintenance shutdown period of 150 hours. From Tata we received 60 hours of maintenance time for this job, starting on Monday 4 December 7:00 until Wednesday 6 December 19:00. Because of the short timeframe, in consultation with Tata it was agreed to work in 12 hours shifts on the basis of a day and night shift. In order to create the required workspace at the rail, the very heavy conveyor belts have been jacked up and a temporary subfloor has been placed over the ore bunkers. After that, the existing rail was removed, in order to be able to weld the new block at the same position. We can proudly announce that the work has been completed well within the stipulated time, with a very enthusiastic Tata project team as a result.
